If Korean skincare has taught us anything (and let’s face it, Korean skincare is everything right now) it’s that there’s no such thing as too many steps in a skin care regime. Okay, so maybe it’s possible to have too many steps – we’re busy people! However, it’s definitely still incredibly important to create a nighttime ritual that will keep your skin well nourished and glowing. Creating a step-by-step process is a good habit, because for many of us, skin reacts well to a consistent routine of healthy care. Proper skin care can prevent wrinkles, acne, dryness, and dullness – plus, it’s fun to get pampered!
That’s a right lady – it doesn’t matter if it’s eight o’clock in the evening or three o’clock in the morning, that makeup is coming off! Leaving makeup on your face overnight is terrible for your skin – it clogs pores (which can cause acne), and the makeup will also cake, which can restrict your skin’s oxygen and collagen levels, increasing the development of wrinkles. Plus, it feels totally awful to wake up in the morning and feel a layer of sticky foundation waiting to be rinsed away. If you’re a procrastinator or tend to be a little lazier towards bedtime, you can even stash a pack of makeup remover wipes in your bedside table. It’s better than nothing!
Apply a facemask
We love facemasks
they are the ultimate way to relax and feel like you’re giving your skin a luxurious treat. Our current favorite types of facemasks are Korean sheet masks – they’re easy to apply, and come in different types for all skin concerns. Try a charcoal sheet mask – not only does the charcoal remove impurities, and clear and reduce pores – it looks ridiculous! Send a couple Snapchats to your friends while you wait for the mask to set, and let the laughing ensue.
Now that your makeup and facemask are out of the way, it’s time to give your face a good cleanse. Oil-based cleansers are very popular right now, because oil helps to balance your skin’s natural moisture level. However, we recommend simply choosing your favorite gentle cleanser that works best for you. Always make sure to avoid cleansers that make your skin feel ‘tight’ afterwards – those ones are harsh and are over drying. Instead, opt for something like Cetaphil or Kiehl’s. Take your time to shop around and find the cleanser that you love the most – you’ll be using one your whole life!
There’s no better way to feel fresh and glowing than a good exfoliation! As always, we prefer to use chemical exfoliants because they’re much less abrasive on skin than physical ones. Pick up any product at the drugstore with ingredients such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid. These are called alpha-hydroxyl and beta-hydroxyl acids, and they’re excellent at removing the top layers of dead skin on your face. Goodbye dullness!
Don’t have wrinkles yet? Yep, grab some anyway! We know that retinol products can be quite expensive, but it’s good to look at retinol as an investment in your skin’s future. Retinol can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it’s even better at preventing wrinkles from happening in the first place. That’s why it’s good to start young! Retinol encourages cell turnover, which helps your skin to regenerate itself. It’s also great to put on right before bed, because that’s when your skin is working the hardest!
Apply a toner
Although toner is not exactly an “it” product right now, it’s a great way to remove any dirt and makeup that your cleanser missed. Toner will also even skin tone, reduce hyperpigmentation, balance the pH level of your skin, and reduce redness. You can opt for a popular big-league player like Clinique, or just pick up some Witch Hazel at the local drug store. Find the ingredients that work the best for your skin needs, and make sure it has a nice scent to fall asleep with!
If you have the time of course – and we know, sometimes night routines need to be cut short – some of us have jobs! This is the right time to take care of facial hair removal – specifically maintaining your eyebrows and any light hair removal or bleaching. Plucking, waxing, or bleaching can often result in redness, and we think it’s better to risk that at night, when no one is going to see it!
This is our favorite step, and it’s the most important one! There’s nothing that feels more heavenly than slathering lots of moisturizer onto your skin and feeling everything sink in. There are hundreds of amazing moisturizers to choose from, and you can choose your product based on your skin care needs. For oilier skin, a gel works well. For dry skin, a heavy cream is best. Get samples, and keep trying until you find your holy grail!
Our secret weapon! Cold cream is not just for your grandma. It’s an all-purpose cream cleanser, that can be used to remove makeup, wash your skin, and as a moisturizer. When it becomes really dry, we like to add cold cream on top of our regular moisturizer as a barrier to lock moisture in. It’s also really affordable, so you can go wild – put it on your neck, chest, shoulders, elbows – anywhere you think needs a little extra TLC!
Drink a glass of water
Now that you’ve finished your extensive nighttime skin care regime, think back on your day. How many glasses of water did you drink?…that’s what we thought. Pour yourself a nice big glass of water, and sip it slowly while you scan through your mental checklist for the following day. It will ensure that you don’t wake up thirsty, and keep your skin glowing from the inside out. Feeling a little cold? Just replace the glass of water with a nice cup of herbal tea!
